Everton's Top-four Bid Foiled By Baggies

The Toffees entered the match with a chance to jump over their Merseyside rivals Liverpool and into the final Champions League position thanks to the Reds' 2-2 draw with Aston Villa at Anfield on Saturday. Despite missing key attackers Gerard Deulofeu and Ross Barkley, the visiting side had the better of the play early on and capitalized on a defensive lapse by West Brom to take the lead four minutes before the intermission. Gareth Barry got the scoring play started when he lofted a free kick down the left channel into the path of Romelu Lukaku, who quickly headed the ball to Kevin Mirallas and the Belgian fired it under Ben Foster into the bottom left corner. West Brom created a spectacular opportunity in the 54th minute as Nicolas Anelka drove to the end line and sent a low cross into the area for Victor Anichebe, but the former Everton man couldn't get a solid shot on target. But go!! the Baggies kept at view it and were finally rewarded with an equalizer 15 minutes from time when James Morrison sliced a cross into the penalty area where defender Diego Lugano powered a header inside Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard's near post. Following the goal, West Brom played with their tails up and went in search of a winning goal, but it was Everton that had the final opportunity with a free kick on the left side of the box. The second ball following the cross came back to Barry, whose strike was turned in by Sylvain Distin, but the flag was up for offside and the clubs settled for united states a share of the spoils.
